RED MOTT AND THE FIREBALL
It was a sunny day as Red Mott bit off part of a banana, kept his hands on the wheel of the caterpillar, and drove a pile of dirt fifty feet into a ditch. It was a motor grader that he was happy to operate, considering the cost of the machine was over 425,000 dollars. “Who wouldn’t be happy driving one,” he would tell his wife of thirteen years.
He had been plowing the piles of dirt around the large worksite for the better part of the morning, thinking about his next meal and grabbed another banana from the red lunch pail.
Red Mott was not the biggest and brightest pickle in the cucumber jar but with whiskers and blue and red checkered shirt he could operate a grader like no one in the field.
He had been working the site of the small town in Kentucky for the past month, one of the first to arrive at the site after the contract on the new mall was signed by the county clerks and contractor.
The townspeople had shown up at the meeting, arguing about the merits to have this mall built within the small town, where half were for and half against. The one retaining vote from the council was Pastor Lori from The Church of Christ who gave the approving vote. Half the people from this town went home unhappy with the decision, but accepted it after some time, considering it might be nice to have a shopping center close by. Even Edna Willmington, in ardent opposition came to the conclusion it might be nice to have a choice of handbags to buy from the many shops that would spring up.
The huge piece of whatever flew down from nowhere to where Red Mott was grading this Sunday morning, and Red Mott was no more. The sheer size of what some people would later call a rock that pummeled the motor grader and its driver below the surface of the ground, the only thing seeable was the rock, the size of the Epcot Dome at Disney in Orlando Florida. There was a huge explosion. It broke windows from miles away, but continued to throw up pieces of explosion in all directions.
“The Lord is my shepherd, nothing shall I want,” Pastor Lori was preaching at the pulpit. “Yea shall follow me, as I am the truth, the way. Have no strange Gods before me. You must choose brothers and sisters. You must choose the right path that God alone, has given to you to follow.” His jaw dropped at the sound of the explosion. “What on tarnation was that!” the Pastor cried emphatically, as if who would dare interrupt his sermon. The townspeople at the Church of Christ looked around, one screamed a shock of horror, and a few ran outside to see what happened. The rest of the church emptied out into the courtyard as a piece of the explosion came hurling toward the church parking lot.
One of the parishioners was Walt Easer, commonly known as Weaser by the town folk. “I’m going down to take a look,” he shouted to the others standing by in wonder. He ran to his F-150 and headed down the main road toward the source.
Weaser was well liked by most of the people who knew him. He would often go to the small diner in town and people would say, “Hey there’s Weaser,” or “it’s Weaser, come sit with us.” Weaser would always oblige and go sit with whoever called him. Sometimes he would need to choose which table to sit at. There was an exception to who liked Weaser. Erma Dunes hated Weaser. She would often pick her nose while sitting in the corner by herself, and often she’d eat whatever came out. She hated Weaser as she disliked the fact everyone liked Weaser and no one liked her except her mother. Why wouldn’t the other people in town like her? She was an up-an-coming writer and she would someday be famous. I guess the nose picking might be one reason why.
When Weaser arrived at the site of the giant rock he stayed back and observed. There were several people running from the rock that was still exploding and flinging large fire balls across the sky.
